Abstract

Vegetation Index has been used to estimate vegetation condition as an indicator of vegetation health. Likewise, topographic information in the form of DEM (Digital Elevation Model) is a useful information in the study of hydrological processes in catchment area. Nowaday both vegetation index and DEM have not been fully used for hydrologic research without taking into account the response of topographic situation, vegetation, and hydrological processes of catchment. Two catchments that represent two contrasting climates are chosen as location in this study: Sumani in Indonesia and Brunswick in Australia. EVI (Enhanced Vegetation Index), daily precipitation, and stream discharge are used as parameters from year 2000 to 2009. Data are processed with MatLab and GIS and presented as time series for ten year period. Results show that despite some similarities in topographic properties, the EVI exhibit distinct patterns in both response patterns and distribution that is independent of precipitation. This pattern is identified as a result of surface runoff, land use, and character of the catchments.
